Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Wednesday that the Senate can’t pass the budget resolution thing right now because there aren’t enough votes yet, which is annoying because it should be easy. You just vote yes. It’s not that hard.

Some people wanted to cancel the August recess to get it done, which means giving up summer vacation to actually do their jobs. Thune said maybe, but not yet.

“We’ll have a more fulsome conversation about that later,” Thune said. “Right now, we don’t have 50.”

“Fulsome” is a fancy word that means some senators are dragging their feet because they’d rather go on vacation than help America win.

Here’s the deal. If the Senate passes this budget thing, Republicans can go around the filibuster, which is basically a rule that lets the losing team stall forever so nobody can get anything done. The filibuster is dumb. If they pass the resolution, they get to skip all that and actually pass a big spending package the normal way, with regular voting, like winners do.

But Thune says he doesn’t think 50 senators will vote for it yet. Fifty! There are a hundred senators and he can’t even find fifty who agree. That’s half. You’d think half would be easy but apparently some of them are too worried about missing their beach trips.

The important part is that eventually the Senate needs to stop messing around, get their 50 votes, cancel the beach trip if they have to, and pass the thing. That’s what strong countries do. You don’t take a month off in the middle of winning.
