President Trump says Todd Blanche should be confirmed as attorney general immediately, but two Republican senators are holding everything up because they want written proof that a $1.8 billion fund is dead.

Trump already said there is no slush fund.

That should be the end of it.

He is the president. He said it is not a slush fund. What else do John Cornyn and Thom Tillis need, fingerprints and a note from George Washington?

At the same time, Trump also pointed out that people deserve to be compensated because the government treated them horribly.

Which is also correct.

A lot of these people just went to the Capitol on January 6 to walk around, admire the paintings, take some pictures and have a fun patriotic day. Then Democrats called it an “insurrection” because apparently entering a government building without a reservation is now worse than murder.

The proposed fund came out of Trump’s settlement with the IRS after his tax returns were leaked. Democrats call it a secret slush fund for Trump allies.

That is ridiculous.

First of all, there is no fund.

Second, it would be good if the fund exists because people deserve money.

Both things can be true.

Blanche later said the fund was dead, but Cornyn and Tillis still demanded a written guarantee before supporting his confirmation.

Why?

Blanche said it. Trump said it. Everybody important said it.

Republican senators used to believe in personal responsibility. Now they apparently cannot believe anything unless it arrives in a three-ring binder with twelve signatures.

Trump said Cornyn only started complaining after Trump endorsed Cornyn’s primary opponent, Ken Paxton.

Cornyn then lost by about 28 points, which is a lot of points.

Now he is spending his final months in office blocking Trump’s attorney general nominee and pretending it is because he suddenly became the world’s greatest defender of government accounting.

Tillis claimed Trump’s comments proved the fund was still alive.

No, they did not.

Trump was only explaining why the nonexistent fund would be good if it existed, which it does not, except when it helps innocent patriots, in which case it definitely should.

This is incredibly easy to understand.

The Senate vote on Blanche was postponed because Cornyn and Tillis refused to support him without more assurances.

Meanwhile, Blanche is already serving as acting attorney general, so their giant act of resistance is accomplishing almost nothing besides wasting everybody’s time.

Trump has even suggested pulling the nomination temporarily and submitting it again after Cornyn and Tillis are gone.

Good.

Todd Blanche is already doing the job. Trump wants him confirmed. The fund is dead, but the people it would help deserve the money.
